There are a number of repellants in the market. Unfortunately, most of them contain chemicals which may be poisonous to your pests or your children. Moreover, most of these chemical repellants are often ineffective. However, some organic repellants have proved to do better and are also safe. Cayenne pepper
When a solution of cayenne pepper is sprinkled around the entrance of the den will help to drive the skunks away. Unfortunately, this solution has to be applied after every 24 hours and after a rain. It is also important to use other measures together with it such as fencing to ensure that the skunk does not return.
You can also prepare a hot pepper spray by using onion and jalapeño pepper and cayenne pepper. Chop one yellow onion and a few jalapeno pepper then mix with one tablespoon of cayenne pepper. Boil these in water for at least 20 minutes. Take cheesecloth and strain the mixture with it then place into a spray bottle. Skunks often avoid anything sprayed with this mixture. With this, you will need to reapply it after three days or after it has rained. .
Citrus peels
Sprinkle orange or lemon peels around where skunks live and they will begin to avoid such areas. This technique is often effective since peels last until they begin to decompose. They also help to repel other pests. Once the skunk is gone, fence your compound to avoid their return.
Predator urine
You can sprinkle dog’s urine or coyotes or any other predator around the den. These often have some level of effects. The disadvantage of this organic solution is that you will need to reapply the solution after every twenty four hours and sometimes, rain might sweep it away. You also need to put up a fence once the skunk are gone to prevent them from returning. Be warned, dogs urine might attract other dogs.
